Kids should start flossing as soon as they have two teeth that touch. This usually happens around ages 2–3, but it can vary.

Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach, which is important for preventing cavities and gum problems.

At first, parents will usually need to floss for their child, and as they get older and more coordinated (around 7–10 years old), they can start doing it themselves with supervision.
